Homemade Chocolates

Chocolate can be very healthy when homemade using whole quality healthy ingredients. Chocolate is full of antioxidants, flavonoids, magnesium, iron, calcium and more. It has been shown to be helpful for heart, brain and nerve health as well as being beneficial for blood sugars (without the added sugars) and a happy mood, see here for more on the benefits of chocolate.

Homemade chocolate is easy and delicious, and the fun of it is you can add any additions that you enjoy whether this is dried fruit, nuts, chilli, extra sea salt, cinnamon, spices, superfoods or seeds, which can make these little treasures even more delicious. These are a great gift for loved ones to celebrate with or simply to enjoy as an alternative to store-bought chocolate that can contain many undesirable ingredients such as vegetable fat, excess sugar and dairy.

  • 2/3 cup (150 g) of raw cacao butter
  • 4 tbsp cacao powder
  • 4 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp nut butter
  • 4 tbsp cacao nibs
  • 30 almonds (1-2 for each chocolate (optional)
  • extra cacao nibs for sprinkle on chocolates


  1. If cacao butter is hard, chop it into small pieces or pulse lightly in a food processor.
  2. Over a double boiler, melt cacao butter and stir until it is melted.
  3. Add in all remaining ingredients (except almonds and extra nibs) and stir well over the heat until well combined, about 7 minutes.
  4. Pour into chocolate molds or pour and spread out onto a lined large flat tray for chocolate bark.
  5. Sprinkle extra cacao nibs and almonds into each mold or over the smoothed out chocolate.
  6. Place into the fridge or freezer to set for 30 minutes.
  7. Remove from molds and store in an air-tight container for up to one week.


  • Cacao butter – coconut oil
  • Cacao powder – carob powder
  • Maple syrup– honey, rice malt
  • Coconut oil – macadamia oil
  • Nut butter – coconut butter

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 30 minutes (in freezer)

Total time: 40 minutes
