This might sound like common sense but one of the most important things to know about food is…the closer it is to its natural state, the healthier! In its natural state we get to fill up on heaps of micronutrients, which are essentially vitamins and minerals, that give fruits and vegetables those magical healing powers that I mentioned yesterday.
As my journey continues I’m learning a lot about the fruits and vegetables in my juice. I’d even say I’m quite close to coining myself as a health nut! I better write down what I’ve been learning about the fruits and veggies I put through my juicer so I can remember this for the rest of my life!
Celery — It’s one of my favorite things to add to any juice. It’s high in magnesium, nourishes the nervous system, and is great to add to a juice after a workout for its replenishing electrolytes. It’s even been said that chomping on a stalk of celery is just as good as for your teeth as brushing them. Who knew!
Tomatoes — They are rich in potassium and lycopene that helps promote overall mental and physical health.
Kale — Oh how I love my kale! It’s the leafy green that offers the most bang for your buck in terms of pure nutrients: it’s super-rich in vitamins A,C and E, all of which support immune function.
Cucumbers — These contain potassium and phytosterols which can help lower cholesterol. They’re high in water, which make them great for juicing! The dark green skin gives a boost of chlorophyll, but make sure the skin isn’t waxed.
Carrots — The beautiful carrot can contribute to the slowing of age-related eye problems like macular degeneration and offer cancer-fighting antioxidants.
Apples — Not only are they delicious, they promote intestinal activity, while protecting “good” HDL cholesterol levels in the blood.
How much of this can be said of french fires or hamburgers?
