Lemon, Lime & Bitters Juice – Recipe of the Week

In a recent post that I wrote called Gallbladder: What? Why? And Ways to Reduce Incidence I mentioned the beneficial effect of consuming bitter and sour foods. These foods stimulate the digestive process by improving the efficiency of stomach acid, digestive enzymes and bile production. Bitter and sour foods also improve liver function and can decrease the incidence of gallbladder stones.

This juice is perfect if you are feeling sluggish, it can certainly put a zesty spring back in your step.

If you find the juice too sour or too bitter or both, you can add more fruit or a little stevia as you get used to these new flavours on your palate. If you do not like watercress or you have some difficulty in obtaining this leafy green, you can easily substitute any of the other green bitters suggested in the substitution list.

  • 1 Lemon
  • 1 Lime
  • 1 cup Watercress
  • 2-3 Green Apples


  1. Wash the produce well.
  2. Peel the lemon and lime (Optional).
  3. Juice all ingredients.
  4. Pour over ice and enjoy.


  • Lemon – yellow or ruby grapefruit, orange, mandarin, tangerine
  • Lime – yellow or ruby grapefruit, orange, mandarin, tangerine
  • Watercress – cucumber, green cabbage, spinach, kale, radicchio, endive, beetroot leaves,
  • Rocket (arugula), chicory (witlof), collard leaves, dandelion leaves
  • Apple – other types of apples, pear, kiwi, green grapes
