Allergies (Seasonal)

AllergiesAlso known as Seasonal Rhinitis, this condition is often caused by an immune response to allergens in the environment like pollen, ragweed, mold, dust and pet hair.  Oral Allergy Syndrome, which people often describe as an “itchy throat” that mimics seasonal allergies can occur when eating foods such as apples, raspberries or peaches. These symptoms can sometimes be due to pesticides found on the skin of these fruits, and not due to the fruits themselves; however, this varies from person to person.


Foods/Choices to Include:

  • Calcium-rich foods: Dark leafy greens (broccoli, kale, collards), non-GMO and organic/unprocessed soy products- edamame and tofu, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds
  • Magnesium-rich foods: Dark leafy greens (Swiss chard, broccoli, kale, collards), nuts and seeds, avocado, bananas
  • Beta-carotene rich foods: Sweet potato, winter squash, pumpkin, carrots, dandelion greens, cabbage, spinach
  • Lycopene-rich foods: Tomatoes
  • Omega-3 rich foods: Walnuts, chia seeds, salmon

Foods/Choices to Avoid:

  • Conventional meats
  • Dairy products (milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt)
  • Eggs
  • Peanuts
  • Shellfish,
  • Citrus (lemon, lime, grapefruit)
  • Chocolate
  • Alcohol
  • Foods with preservatives
  • High sugar foods.
  • Foods that cause “itchy throat” or oral allergy syndrome that may include: raw apple, pear, banana, peaches, tomato, kiwi, carrots, sunflower seeds, cherries, celery, melon, cucumber, raw zucchini.
